The newest movie by the Wachowski Brothers, Speed Racer, debuted last weekend to mixed critical reception. The movie went up against the big $100 Million dollar making Iron Man, and came short with $20 million over the weekend. The movie cost $150 Million to make, which will give the Wachowski Brothers about $100 million to make up after its monthly run. The way I see it, most of its target audience (10 year Old boys) had the choice to go see this or Iron Man, and obviously they chose the (better) latter. I can’t really blame em. Guy In Iron Suit Fighting Evil > Emile Hersh.
As you may know, I was looking forward to several promising movies this summer, including Stepbrothers and Wanted, both of which now have been slapped with an R rating, meaning I can’t get in. Thanks a lot MPAA, thanks a lot. Why, c’mon guys, take out a few swear words, cut out some violence, get it low enough so that it can have a PG-13 and so that I can enjoy the great awesome overload that would come with Morgan Freeman wielding a pistol. I guess I’ll just have to wait until DVD, but until then, I guess I’ll go see the Happening.
I hope if we are ever attacked by a giant mysterious monster and I’m filming it, that I have a steadier hand than the cameraman in this movie. I felt like throwing up at times. The movie follows a group of friends-the guy going to Tokyo on business, and has a girlfriend who he isn’t as close with as he used to be. There’s also a girl and her boyfriend who is the business guy’s brother, who gets this guy who likes this other girl at the party. Just wanted you to know, because they’re the only main characters in the story. Pretty soon during they’re party this massive explosion goes off, and sends everyone into a panic. I will warn you, if you don’t like shaky cameras or get sick easily, DON’T WATCH THIS MOVIE. If you want something different, take a rent. The movie spans about a 90 min timeframe, which is good, it didn’t need to be too long. I started to buy this at one point, and I’m glad I didn’t. The movie is just one of those watch it once, you’ll love it or dislike it, or hate it. The movie is definitely an interesting one, it’s unique in it’s filming style, but the rocky camera and lack of re-watch keep it at a rent status.
“Some prefer the weapon you don’t have to fire; I however prefer the weapon you only have to fire once!” This quote comes from Tony Stark in one of the opening scenes of the new movie Iron Man. If someone ever captured awesomeness and put it in a bottle and then put it in movie form (which that task alone would be difficult), it would be the movie Iron Man. The movie stars the perfect Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, a clever, smart mouthed genius billionaire, who builds a suit to stop the terrorists that enslaved him and then uses it to help the people he put in harm’s way. Terrence Howard, the dude himself Jeff Bridges, and Samuel L. Jackson also star, but the real star of the show in my opinion was Downey, his portrayal of Tony Stark was amazing, and had me laughing and fully believing his character. An interesting note of perspective is that Stark isn’t just this teenager that coincidentally gets bit by a spider, but instead is a man who has earned this responsibility, yet has no superpowers, and has a realistic sense about him. The movie spans about a 2 hour storyline, which was just right for the movie, it didn’t run too short, but it didn’t stay too long (cough Spiderman 3 cough Pirates 3), sorry, I’ve gotta go get that checked out. The movie had a nice blend of action and drama, not spending too much time in any area. Tony Stark’s womanizing, gambling, and alcoholic ways were touched on in the movie, but have been rumored to surface in the later parts of the trilogy. The movie also pulled in some very comedic elements, making me (and the joker behind me who laughed like he had a hernia) laugh out loud at times. You may remember (however I doubt it) a review a while back I did of Jumper where I said the movie was action packed, but didn’t bring any depth that made it deep enough to fully entertain. Iron Man fully delivers, providing a rich storyline worth watching. With all kinds of blockbusters, thrillers, and big box office expectations, Iron Man is definitely a good way to start it off. The movie is just a pure thrill ride from the start with AC DC’s Back in Black to the closing credit’s inevitable inclusion of Black Sabbath’s Iron Man. The movie is just a lot of fun, it’s adrenaline filled and provides a great story, and is a definite must-see for any comic book nerds like myself or other action junkie.
If you haven’t seen the movie I Am Legend, turn off the air conditioning under than rock of yours and check it out. The movie follows Robert Neville’s pursuit of (happyness) survival as the last man on earth. He pursued this sometimes the ol’ American way. WIth weapons. One of his main weapons in the movie, M4 Rifle, is now on sale in England…for $9000. If you’re that big of a fan of the movie, I say more power to you. Go ahead, buy it, and yell at your friend Fred and threaten to shoot him if he isn’t real. Here’s the link to the sale page.
