Attention everyone! I have an urgent news bulletin! I had heard about the movie Anchorman for a while now, and had just now decided to finally watch it. And after seeing this movie, I am definitely glad I set the time aside to watch it. The movie follows Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrel), quite possibly the dumbest anchorman, but what Will Ferrel does to make the character constantly fresh and funny is genius. He is followed by his expert news team including Brick Tamland (Steve Carell), Champ Kind (David Koechner), and Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd), each one hilarious in their own different ways. The movie’s plot takes place in 1970s as Ron, along with the rest of his crew and the world struggle to get used to the world’s first female anchor. Possibly my favorite thing about this movie was the fact that it had such an ensemble cast in its ranks. Carell, Koechner, Rudd, along with Vince Vaughn, Sean William Scott, Jack Black, Fred Willard, Ben Stiller and more bare their comedic chops at their best strength. The main joke of the movie is this airheaded fluffy hair know-nothing anchor of Will Ferrel and his gang, but even though the movie quite often pokes fun at it, it stays fresh and hilarious through the 1 1/2 hour run time. The movie is entirely quotable, with lines like “I am going to punch you in your ovary. Straight shot to the baby maker.”, or any lines from Carell or Koechner still providing laughs to me days after watching the movie. The slapstick and goofball humor of the film is often it’s best aspect, but people not as familiar or as big of fans of the genre won’t like the movie at all. There’s really nothing else to say about the movie besides it’s instant hilarity, great cast, and the fact it’s filled with classic quotes for Apatow or just plain good comedy fans. Sometimes, the movie’s constant dumb tone leaves you a little brain dead, and maybe 5% of the jokes may fall flat to some. Overall, if you’re looking for a laugh out loud movie, or just looking for a good rent on a friday night and haven’t seen this movie yet, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy will be sure to make you laugh, as long as you let your mind relax a little, and have some fun.
